Bright garnet. Very classic northern Rhône Syrah that Michel Chapoutier says expresses bacon not black olive for once! Fresh with lower alcohol than most years. Saline with smooth tannins. Already almost drinkable.

The 2021 Côte Rôtie Nève (100% Syrah brought up in 30% new oak) is more masculine and mineral-laced, with vibrant cassis, black cherry, raspberry fruits as well as some textbook Côte Rôtie floral, game, and peppery, spicy nuances. It’s more focused, tight, and backward compared to the La Mordorée, and is going to need more time. Both Côte Rôties are impressive and well worth seeking out.
