The 1998 Tokay-Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos St. Theobald Selection de Grains Nobles Lot #1 was harvested on October 10, with yields of only 12 h/h. Aromatically, it exhibits sweet yellow fruits and spices. It is a wine of extraordinary focus, delineation, and concentration. It appears to be well balanced, and to possess lots of grip, but lacks density and expression of fruit. That being said, readers would be hard-pressed to find wines with this offering’s level of concentration. It would be fascinating, ten to fifteen years from now, to see how this wine has progressed. Qualitatively, one would expect it to be scratching at the door of perfection.
