The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon comes from vines in Helderberg, Bottelary and Vlottenberg wards and aged for 20 months in new oak with two rackings. Clean and pure on the nose, this is the one label from Jean Smit that doesn’t quite communicate the grape variety with the same panache as the Syrahs or Cabernet Franc. The palate is medium-bodied, silky smooth, quite peppery with gentle grip, though there is a little unnecessary heaviness on the finish.
